Reactivity of carbon6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Our next steps include implementing catalysts and more complex molecules into carbon nanotubes, Kaiser confirms. Going forward, there are a number of innovations that might be developed and applied to the current experimental design for example, catalysts other than rhenium, carbon sources other than the fullerene cage wall, nanotubes produced or grown using an alternative method, nanotubes using different fullerene, or variations in the e-beam. In order to provide a comprehensive description of a possible mechanism for nanoprotrusion formation on carbon nanotube walls," adds Bichoutskaia, we used a multi-scale modeling approach that combined accurate quantum chemical methods with semi-empirical molecular dynamics simulations. To accomplish this we developed the real-time imaging and data acquisition technology to reveal carbon nanotubes and their interior in high contrast and atomic resolution. Kaiser comments that Our aim is use low voltage TEM which is now possible after the introduction of hardware aberration correction by Harald Rose, Max Haider and Knut Urban to study in detail the atom-by-atom level influence of electron-beam interacting with low-Z matter, which is matter with a low atomic number. They have succeeded at imaging the delicate molecules with atomic resolution and, most importantly, at capturing them in action i.e., in chemical processes within the carbon nanotube in real time. The second challenge, he continues, was solved by the researchers in Ulm, who applied a specially designed electron microscope that utilizes low energy electrons for imaging molecules and atoms. It appears that such modified fullerenes are excellent vehicles for delivery of metal atoms into nanotubes, as they enter in nanotube spontaneously and irreversibly. We tagged each fullerene with a single atom of rhenium metal, so that each molecule brings a catalytically active metal atom into the nanotube, Khlobystov explains. The fullerenes are known to be attracted strongly into the nanotube cavity by van der Waals forces. To address these challenges, the team exploited the remarkable affinity of carbon nanotube with fullerenes carbon nanostructures, which look like nanometer-sized cages and can be considered as structurally related to nanotubes. The second major challenge, he adds, was to study the delicate molecules, reactive atoms and their chemical transformation inside nanotubes in real-time at the atomic level. The presence of such metal atoms within the nanotube is important not just for investigating the chemical reactivity of the inner sidewall, but also for creating new nanostructures from the nanotube, notes Khlobystov. The main experimental challenge the team faced was to devise a method for delivering single atoms of catalytically active metal into very narrow carbon nanotubes with a diameter of 1.5 nm about 80,000 times smaller than the thickness of human hair. Meyer and Jens Leschner recorded the AC-HRTEM images and contributed to the initial explanation of the observations. Besley and Adriano Santana performed the theoretical modeling and explained the details of the reaction mechanisms and Johannes Biskupek analyzed the images, carried out TEM image simulations, and with Jannik C. Chamberlain designed the experiments, synthesized the materials and analyzed the microscopy data Ute Kaiser contributed to the development of the experimental methodology and discussion of the results Elena Bichoutskaia, Nicholas A. Khlobystov conceived of the initial idea, proposed the general mechanism and wrote the original manuscript Thomas W. ![]() Cozumel cruise ship port map6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() There are cenotes all throughout the Yucatan peninsula. We stayed at an all-inclusive in Puerto Aventuras and took a day-trip to Chichen Itza and had enough time to swim in a Cenote as well! You can read all about it here. But if you think you may find yourself staying on the Riviera Maya at some point in the future, or visiting one of the closer cruise ports (Progresso or Costa Maya), then I’d hold off on this one. So if Cozumel is the closest you will ever get to Chichen Itza and you’re cool with long bus rides, then go for it. It’s stunning! But I’ll be honest with you, is Cozumel the best way to see Chichen Itza? That depends! Chichen Itza is about 8 hours round-trip from Cozumel and only allows for about 45 minutes on site (which is not much at all since it’s a whole complex). When starting Pool of Radiance, the first order of business - after getting past the irritating code-wheel-based copy protection, that is - must be to create your six-character adventuring party. And, while I wouldn’t accuse the writing of being precisely good, it is knowing and entertaining in its pulpy cheesiness - and really, how much more can one expect out of such an artificial narrative experience as a traditional monster-bashing CRPG? Dorte and I laughed at the writing a lot, but, hey, it was good-natured laughter we didn’t go in expecting Shakespeare. In addition to flavor text, you’ll also find maps, diagrams, and illustrations inside the paragraph book to further enrich the experience. ![]() To my mind, though, Pool of Radiance‘s paragraph book is richer and more interesting than that of Wasteland. As in the contemporaneous Wasteland, much of that story is moved into an accompanying booklet of paragraphs. More interesting to me is the game’s method of telling the more immediate story of your own party of adventurers. Those like me who couldn’t really care less how Phlan fits into the greater Realms don’t have to worry about it. Those who are invested in the Forgotten Realms as a setting will be able to situate Phlan on a map of the Realms and enjoy the lengthy explication of the region’s history and geography included with the game. You can’t have every party saving the world when said world needs to be shared by hundreds of adventure modules, source books, computer games, and novels. In addition to the decidedly modest heights to which characters are allowed to rise in Pool of Radiance specifically, the need to fit the Gold Box games in general into TSR’s existing milieus tended to rein in such excesses. There are, thank God, no “Chosen Ones” or existential universal threats in Pool of Radiance, a welcome distinction that largely holds true throughout the Gold Box line. In these, as in Pool of Radiance, the stakes for the campaign world are relatively low but the stakes for the players’ party couldn’t be higher. Like so much about Pool of Radiance, the scenario harks back to the tabletop Dungeons & Dragons experience, to iconic low-level adventures like Gary Gygax’s own The Keep on the Borderlands and the classic British module The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh. Instead of saving the world, you’re “only” out to save a little town called Phlan that’s been largely overrun with monsters in recent years. It’s surprisingly modest in scale and scope, at least within the over-the-top context of ludic fantasy in general. The story is appropriate to the characters’ somewhat limited powers. Still, there’s a big difference between level 1 and level 6, and the thrill of seeing your characters advance and grow in power, so much at the heart of an RPG’s appeal, is the greatest at the lower levels. This article describes what we found therein.īeing the first game in a series that would spawn three direct sequels, Pool of Radiance limits your characters to somewhere between level 6 and 9, depending on class this is strictly a low- to mid-level adventure, reserving the real power-gaming for its sequels. My wife Dorte and I recently played through Pool of Radiance as the first stage in a grander project of trying to take the same party of characters through the entire four-game series that it begins. As Wizardry had been replaced by The Bard’s Tale not so long ago, so was The Bard’s Tale now replaced by the Gold Box. The latter was more than enough to move Pool of Radiance and the Gold Box line it spawned into place as the 1B to the Ultima series’s perennial 1A, replacing the Bard’s Tale games, whose own shooting star was now in the descendant. ![]() Coming as it did near the end of the line for an 8-bit CRPG tradition that began in earnest with the original Ultima and Wizardry games back in 1981, it’s easy to see it as the culmination of that tradition, blending the ideas and approaches of its predecessors with its own brand new commercial trump card, the Dungeons & Dragons license. Pool of Radiance is one of the most important CRPGs of all time in terms of both design and the genre’s commercial history. ![]() Cateye bike computer manual c1375336/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Notably the Cat Eye Strada Slim and Cat Eye Velo Wireless (£32.68 and £25 respectively). I've been out on a few late-night rides mercury sliding to zero-no problems whatsoever. Though the mode button is stealthy, its easily located and cruising through the modes, to check other data was effortless, even when hustling down a 1in7. Controls are easy to use even in full-finger, middleweight gloves. The Quick never missed a beat, regardless of riding conditions. (I Recall a few 89mph readouts, on the flat, while towing my son on his tagalong!). Strong magnetic fields, such as those generated by old fashioned Magnox nuclear power stations, and even some hub dynamos, were enough to meddle with older wireless computer sensors. Just a very consistent and accurate readout, with the pacer arrows doing their nagging duty extremely effectively. The auto stop/start function is reassuringly sensitive, I've found the unit pickup within the wheel's first revolution and there's been no lag whatsoever. Just press the mode button to cruise through these, as required. There are two rows of data-speed/distance/clock etc with pacer arrows egging you on. Its also useable at night-without a backlight function. The Champagne digits on a black background are crystal clear and seems unaffected by extremes-bright sunlight, dusk etc. Straight from the box, I was ready to ride in 20minutes. Literally a question of pressing mode, choosing KMH/MPH, Wheel/Tyre size etc, adjusting the numbers, then pressing menu to confirm. Instructions are very clear and the unit intuitive to setup. The beefy spoke magnet probably helps, but a consistent, reliable readout isn't dependent on these components running a hairs breadth from each other. ![]() Messier perhaps, but ensures a universal fit, especially to oversized blades, such as my Univega's. The sensor tethers to the fork via rubberised 'foot' and cable ties. A precautionary lick of Vaseline on the contacts never hurts, but both units seem genuinely well sealed against the elements. Batteries are easily accessed (simply slide 10p coin, or replacement battery into the slot and twist). The head unit is reckoned to last a year (Based on an hour's daily use), the sensor 6,250 miles. Talking of batteries, both the head unit and analogue fork sensor use the coin type CR1616 cells. Simply press a button in the bracket and pull upward. The head unit is easily removed, say when locking in the street, or changing batteries. The clamp is held together by a 2.5mm Allen bolt. Narrower sections (such as those found on the latest generation of riser-type drops) may require something thicker but nothing a quick rummage in the bodge box won't remedy. Staying with the mount, it fits 31.8 bars, but a shim is included for 25-26.0. However, it ensures the computers' angle is easily adjusted and lodges snugly against the stem, maximising available bar space. Admittedly, the stalk type 'Out front' mount doesn't look particularly aero. The first thing that struck me was just how sleek it looks. The Quick is 62.2mph, which should be adequate for most riders, especially on a commute. Most computers have a maximum speed of 99.9mph. Then there's auto stop/start and pacer arrows denoting when you're exceeding, maintaining or dipping below your average speed. OK, so the Quick is a wireless model offering current, maximum, and average speed, total distance, moving time and clock. Pros: Clear, simple, well-made and easy to use.Ĭons: Expensive, relative to the spec. However, despite considerable charm, there's no getting away from the fact that it is pricey, relative to the functions you get and the competition. Its intuitive to use, easy to read and well-made, despite weighing a feathery 41g.
